Photo of Jean-Pierre LéaudDirector Ferrand (François Truffaut) directs a family drama called Meet Pamela1 about the tragedy that follows when a young French man introduces his parents to his new British wife. Ferrand is beset by production problems. The young womanizer film loving actor Alphonse (Jean-Pierre Léaud) is in love with a disinterested script girl. The international star, Julie Baker (Jacqueline Bisset) is recovering from a nervous breakdown. There's also Severine (Valentina Cortese), the actress playing the mother who walks through her scenes on champagne. The minor problems include the film crew trying to get a kitten to drink milk from a saucer2.

An English stuntman arrives to do a car crash sequence. The director explains that the crash is to be filmed in la nuit americaine3. As a youth, Ferrand dreamed of being another Orson Welles, but now he's pleased to simply work in the same industry. No longer obsessed with making an artistic masterpiece, he's a father, counselor, and encouraging presence to his hand-picked actors and actresses.
