Robert La Rocca (Jean-Paul Belmondo) discovers that his friend, Xavier Adé (Pierre Vaneck), was arrested for a crime that was committed by a rival crime boss. Robert confronts the mobster and kills him. When Robert is also arrested he ends up in the same prison as Xavier.
Both men volunteer to remove WW2 mines at a beach hoping to receive a pardon. Xavier is wounded badly by an exploding mine and as a result, they are released from prison. The two decide to start a new life as countrymen and buy a farm and some land. Xavier will provide the money and being a gangster, he steals it from another gangster. With fatal results.
