Howards End
Why can you not be honest for once in your life?
In 1910 Margaret (Emma Thompson) and Helen Schlegel (Helena Bonham Carter), two parentless but wealthy sisters, befriended Mr. (Anthony Hopkins) and Mrs. Wilcox (Vanessa Redgrave), while traveling around the European continent. Helen develops a brief romance with the younger Wilcox son, Paul, which ends with hurt feelings and shame. The two families meet again, when the Wilcoxes rent an apartment opposite the Schlegels' London town house. Margaret befriends Mrs. Wilcox. The sisters also meet Leonard Bast (Samuel West), an insurance clerk teetering on the edge of respectability.
Then Mrs. Wilcox dies. She leaves her estate, Howards End, to Margaret -- a bequest the Wilcoxes unanimously decide to ignore. Helen feels it is their duty to help Bast and his wife, especially after advice they've given him for which Leonard pays a heavy price. The Schlegel sisters, Leonard Bast and Mr. Wilcox always strive to do what's right, but achieve mostly wrong instead due to class difference.
