Batman, aka Bruce Wayne (Christian Bale) is Gotham's great hope. He sets out to dismantle the remaining criminal organizations that plague the city streets. But soon the debate rages as to whether he is more hero or menace. Batman and his friend Lieutenant Jim Gordon (Gary Oldman) Bruce are impressed with the new D.A. Harvey Dent (Aaron Eckhart). He's heroic, honorable, intelligent, inspirational and able to tackle crime - all without wearing a mask.

The partnership proves to be effective, but they soon find themselves prey to a reign of chaos unleashed by a rising criminal mastermind known as The Joker (Heath Ledger). He starts murdering people just to provoke Batman. But when he kills Dent's girlfriend Rachel (Maggie Gyllenhaal), Dent decides to hunt down anyone who was involved in Rachel's kidnap, including the family of Jim Gordon.
