Phil (Bill Murray) is an acerbic weatherman tired of having to go through the obligatory coverage of the groundhog in Punxsatawney. It's one of those days when Murphy's Law seems to be in full effect. But Phil soon discovers that things are worse than they first seemed, because for him, and him alone, time has stopped. He finds himself in a time loop, forced to repeat Groundhog Day over and over again.
Phil's discoveries about his new, never-ending world are trivial and self-serving and they dawn every morning at 6:00 a.m. He finds that no matter what he tries, even several suicide attempts, he can't seem to get out of this nightmare, all the while falling more and more in love with his producer Rita (Andy MacDowell).
