Confined to the events of a single day (the hottest of the summer) on a single block in the Bedford-Stuyvesant section of Brooklyn. Sal (Danny Aiello), father of two dysfunctional sons, and his Famous Pizzeria have thrived in Bed-Stuy for 25 years.
There are a number of young men and women on the block, highlighted by Radio Raheem (Bill Nunn) who blasts Public Enemy over his boombox, retarded Smiley (Roger Smith) continually hawking his Malcolm X photos to the neighborhood and Mookie (Spike Lee) the pizza delivery boy and local hothead, Buggin´ Out (Giancarlo Esposito). The action starts slowly as we get to know
the community, but racial tensions mount until they explode with the much-discussed violent ending
